Reading Response

Mateo's poetic approach to "How to draw up a project" expresses a conventional process from an abstarct beginning to a concrete end. From the professors at the school architecture, I was taught to start a project with concept phase. More vague and amorphous concepts were favored by many of the professors. As the outcome of the process, solid projects with precise details were the ones receiving praises.

I understand a sentece from the reading, but I do not agree with it. The sentece is that "If a project is a process, it is a process with a fixed direction." If there is only one direction for projects, the projects would look the same (I guess his opinion is somewhat true as there are so many similar buildings in the world). Zaha Hadid mentioned her opinion about not choosing the right angles for her buildings. She said, "why choose the same one?... there are 360 ways to choose from." (this is not the exact quote...sorry). Kahn's apporach of "the immeasurable... through measurable...to the immeasurable" has taken different rhythm to accomplish his projects.

In order to draw a project, architect should be able to explore and explain his or her concept with structure and other means to bring it to life. The space & the quality of experience which exist within the project shall be the most important factor.

  1. By suggesting that a project is a process with a fixed direction, I think it is refering more to a fixed position rather than a fixed method of building. I do not think it means all projects will look the same; instead I believe it is suggesting that all good projects similarly have a dedicated position from which they justified the decisions within their porjects.

  2. I agree that space and the quality of experience of the project is the most important factor. When I was reading the part about a fixed direction I thought it as a concept of the project.

  3. Fixed direction, I feel, is the clear goal of a project. In the architectural projects, not just architects but people from many different disciplines are invloved. By having this fixed direction, we can all progress in a same direction during the process.
I also think that fixed direction can go backwards if needs to. It means that during any of our prcess, we can always look back and there might be a new discovery for a project.

  4. I think fixed position may also be dangerous because an architect needs to take into consideration many different things that may affect the position. However an overarching concept is important for unifying the building's identity. I think a balance of the two makes a successful project.
